The History of the 192nd Field Artillery Battalion

192nd FA BN

The 192nd FA BN served with the 43rd Inf. Div. in the Pacific Theater during WW II. The 43 Inf. Div. consisted of National Guard members from the states of Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine, and Connecticut. The 192nd FA BN was made of citizens from Conn., primarily from Fairfield County. The paragraphs below describe the battalion's evolution.

A militia was formed circa 1642 in the town of Stamford by Capt. John Underhill to deal with presence of Indians. He borrowed 20 English pounds to equip and man a military unit. In 1672 the Stamford and Greenwich units made up part of the Ninth Regiment of Militia. In 1737 the unit was called to duty and fought in the French and Indian War as well as serving in the American Revolution. It's first action during the Revolution was the Battle of Long Island on 27, August 1776.

In September of 1862 the unit, now designated Company I, was called to serve in the Civil War. It's first engagement came at Goldsboro, North Carolina on 14, December 1862. During the Civil War the unit fought at Bull Run, Georgia 1862, South Carolina 1862, South Carolina 1863, Louisiana 1863, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.

In 1917 most of the men from Stamford and Greenwich were assigned into Batteries E and F 103rd Field Artillery along with 7th and 9th Companies of the 56th Coast Artillery and left for service in Europe during the First World War. During WWI the units fought in Aisne-Marne, Champagne, Oise-Aisne, and the Meuse-Argonne campaigns.

In 1921 the regimental designation was changed to the 192nd Field Artillery Regiment. It became part of the 43rd Infantry Division which consisted of National Guard Units from Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

The 43rd Division entered WWII with its Executive Order dated 14, January 1941 with an effective date of 24, February 1941. The 192nd FA Regiment. was inducted into federal service at New London, CT. as part of the 68th Field Artillery Brigade, 43rd Div. The 192nd Field Artillery Regiment arrived at Camp Blending, Fla. 18, March 1941 and was redesigned 192nd Field Artillery Battalion on 10, February 1942.

The 192nd FA BN was equipped with tractor drawn 155mm howitzers and departed from the San Francisco Port of Embarkation on 1, October 1942 and arrived in New Zealand on 22, October 1942. The battalion entered the Pacific Theater of Operations on 21, February 1943. The 192nd FA BN is credited with campaigns in Guadalcanal; New Solomon Islands; New Guinea; and Luzon, Philippines. The battalion returned to the San Francisco Port of Embarkation on 19, October 1945.

The 192nd FA BN still serves the State of Connecticut with honor and distinction.

The 192nd FA BN was not attached to the 83rd during WWII but served in the 43rd Inf. Div. and fought in the pacific during the war. This page is dedicated to my father CSM Robert C. Moeller (USANG Ret.) who served in the 192 FA BN from 1949-1981.
